Proposing Theology

Author: John Milbank

The Veritas Series from SCM Press and the Centre for Theology and Philosophy at Nottingham University brings to market original volumes all engaging in critical questions of pressing concern to both philosophers, theologians, biologists, economists and more. Each book in this new series displays a rigorous theological critique of categories of study not often thought to be theological in character. The series aims to illustrate that without theology, something essential is lost in our account of such categories – not only in an abstract way but in the way in which we inhabit the world.

The Veritas Series refuses to accept disciplinary isolation: both for theology and for other disciplines.

SERIES EDITORS: CONOR CUNNINGHAM AND PETER  M CANDLER JR

Dr Conor Cunningham is the Assistant Director of the Centre of Theology and Philosophy at the University of Nottingham.
Peter Candler is Assistant Professor of Theology at Baylor University in Texas.

Proposing Theology contends that in modern times a genuine theology has rarely been put forward. This would involve an attempt to articulate a vision that can inform the whole of our thought and culture. To this end, the book sets out a new agenda for the study of theology in the 21st century. It should now be regarded as a humanistic discipline, while retaining its status as the supremely integrating academic subject. Hence theological education is neither conservative nor progressive, though in a sense it is both. A theological vision should be proposed as thinkable and livable, even though it may be freely rejected.
